1916 Commemoration

The staff and pupils of Kilberry N.S. were delighted today to receive a visit by members of the Defence Forces to deliver the National Flag to our school as part of the preparations for the 1916 Commemorations.
The Department of Education and Skills intends that all 3,200 primary schools will receive a visit, to prepare for a display of the Tricolour by students on Proclamation Day, March 15th, 2016.
The official presentation of the flag was made by Lieutenant Hurley and Corporal Davis, and our Senior Infant pupils, Emily Mitchell and Cayden McBride accepted the flag on behalf of our school.
The presentation included a brief history of the national flag and the correct protocol for its use.
Lieutenant Hurley, accompanied by 6th Class pupil, Cian McKenna read part of the Proclamation. Cian read paragraph four of the document, beginning with: “The Irish Republic is entitled to, and hereby claims, the allegiance of every Irishman and Irishwoman . . .”
Preparations for the 2016 Commemorations will continue in our school throughout the year as the Senior pupils will be learning about Ireland in the Twentieth Century and the history of the Rising.
