Dear Parents/Guardians

Car park Update
We understand the frustration of all involved at the delay in starting the car-park and we would like to take this opportunity to explain the reasons for the delay. Three things have happened that have caused this delay.
Reasons for delay:
During the summer holidays contracts had to be signed between the Archbishop’s House in Dublin (owners of school property) and Kildare County Council for the construction of the car-park. This took longer than anticipated as legal documents had to be drawn up and agreed to by both parties.
The Board was actively pursuing this matter during the holidays but people in other offices were taking annual leave which slowed progress.
When we were fundraising for our car-park we were working on the assumption that the car-park would cost in the region of €45,000 to construct. However, upon the issuing of detailed plans by Kildare County Council for the construction of the car park, costs are now coming in at €55,000. Additional funding had to be sourced to make up the shortfall. We are very pleased to announce that after difficult and lengthy negotiations, Kildare County Council have agreed to make up the shortfall.

At present the situation is as follows:
Initial survey of the proposed car park site has taken place.
Additional funding is in place. Funds which were raised by the Parents Association/Board of Management are lodged in the bank.
We are waiting construction date from Kildare Co. Co. who are building the car park. We have to link in with their time frame.
It is proposed to have car park completed by Christmas. We do not have a start date at present but as soon as we know we will inform parents.

The Proposed Plans for construction are as follows.
Work will begin at 9.30 am daily to allow children to access school at normal times.
As the car park will be constructed on the pitch, the children will not have access to this area and the site will be cordoned off.
Home time will be as normal i.e. 1.40pm. for infants and 2.40pm. for the rest of the school.
It is proposed that the construction team will plan their work/breaks around our busy traffic times to ensure the safety of all our pupils.
Further details will be issued closer to the construction date.
We understand and appreciate that this situation is not ideal. We had all anticipated that the car-park would be under way by now. This project is being funded through the generous financial support of NRA, Athy Parish, Kildare County Council and parents, unfortunately, we will have to be patient for a little while longer. The Board of Management considers the car park to be a top priority and although it may seem that nothing has been done, huge work has been undertaken to ensure the success of this project. It has been a more lengthy process to ensure that all the necessary funding and paper work is in place.

Active School
Congratulations to the U’11 football team on reaching the Semi-final of the Cumann na mBunscol League. The team performed brilliantly throughout the league and were narrowly defeated by a strong Kilshanroe team who went on to win the League. Our team performance in the Semi-final was outstanding and the children did Kilberry N.S. proud.
Basketball Club re-commenced in September, and runs every Wednesday from 2.40pm. – 3.40pm. for 4th, 5th and 6th Classes.
Well done to all our new 4th class members who are turning out in large numbers.
We hope to organise some challenge games after the Mid-term break.
The children from 2nd – 6th are completing their swimming lessons this week and will be awarded their Certificates during Active Week.
Tag Rugby is ongoing and will run up to Christmas for 4th, 5th and 6th Classes.
Green School
Litter Review:
The Green Schools Committee carried out a Lunch Box Survey earlier this month 63% of children had reusable bottles and only 10% had tin foil. It’s great to see everyone making an effort to reduce, reuse and recycle.
All classes were involved in a Litter and Waste Review in the hall. We discovered that we could make a better effort to use our bins properly.
We also discovered that a lot of full lunches were being thrown into the bin – unopened!
Energy Review:
The Energy Committee is keeping a close eye on energy consumption in Kilberry N.S. and monitoring the metre every day. Little changes like closing the blinds in the evening and closing doors after us help to keep the heat in. Everyone at school is remembering LOLO – Last Out Lights Off.
We will be renewing our Litter and Waste Flag and applying for our Energy Flag in March so let’s all make a big effort at home and at school.

Christmas Shoebox Appeal
The Team Hope Shoebox Appeal is up and running again in the school this year. Leaflets have been distributed to the oldest child in each family.
Closing date for completed boxes is Friday 8th November. Further details on
Jacinta O’Donnell is coming to our school on Friday mornings. It is wonderful to hear such beautiful singing from the children of Kilberry N.S.
On Friday all pupils are allowed to dress up for Halloween. We will be hosting a Trick or Treat for Temple street. All families are invited to bring €2 for this worthy cause. Parents please ensure that costumes are safe and appropriate. Older children are asked not to be too scary, as this might upset the younger children!
Reminder, we have children in school who have a severe nut allergy.
Nuts or products with nuts are not allowed in school (This includes nutella). Thank you for your co-operation on this matter.

November / December

Dear Parents

It is with great delight we are able to announce the development of a car park is to proceed. Following a recosting of the proposed plans the new figure required to develop the car park is roughly €45,000. The reduction in price comes as a result of the economic downturn and a revision of construction spec. Development costs will be funded from the county council, a very generous contribution from the parish and fundraising. As a result of this, we will be fundraising over the next year.. Without the continued support from parents, the Parish of Athy, the Board of Management and local county councillors and T.D.s (in particular Jack Wall and Mark Wall) this project would not be at this stage. We thank you all for your continued support to ensure the safety of the children in Kilberry N.S.

To start our fundraising campaign we will be launching our Christmas C.D. in the next two weeks. This C.D. is currently being developed and sold by our 6th Class mini company KTunes. All children in the school from Junior Infants to 6th class will feature in the production of the C.D.  The children are currently learning the songs for the C.D. The recording team will be in school next week to record all the children singing their class songs! The C.D. will retail at €10 with all profits going to the car park development fund. So buy an extra special gift for the loved ones in your family with this unique product! 6th class are currently taking orders. Alternatively please contact the school to book this limited edition C.D.

Christmas Cards

Also – how about making Christmas an extra special time by sending families and friends a specially commissioned personalised Christmas card?  Each family will have the opportunity to have their own unique card designed and professionally printed by Vita Media. Each family will receive a blank template to be designed and coloured in pencil. The template can have as many pictures as you like on it eg. If you have 3 children you can draw 3 pictures. To order these special cards, please return the template to school, with the completed booking form. Packs of ten cards will retail at €5 each. Once again all profits will go towards the car park development fund.

Many thanks to all the parents and children who donated a Christmas Shoebox. Over 50 boxes were collected  last week. These boxes will be going to children who don’t receive much for Christmas. Nancy Nolan who collected the boxes is travelling to Ukraine and will take pictures of the children getting their Christmas boxes.

Well done and many congratulations to all 54 children who received full attendance awards for September to Halloween. The next awards will be given on Friday the 21st of December to celebrate and congratulate those who have full attendance from Halloween to Christmas.

Well done and many congratulations to our Girls Basketball team who had a good win against the Curragh Girls School. The next match will be for the boys on Friday against St. Patricks both boys and  girls teams will play  against Kildangan on Tuesday. Best of luck to all involved.

A day in the life

Childrens author and poet Ann Egan came to our school on Wednesday 15th of November. She worked with each class helping the children to write their own poems. It was a great experience and we thank her for all her hard work.

Science Week

As part of science week Ms Healy and Ms Briggs travelled with 5th and 6th classes to Kildare Library on Friday 16th November. In true CSI style they had to complete experiments and solve crimes.

Cyber- Bullying

In light of internet dangers as highlighted in the media Garda Kevin Fahy came to the school on Friday the 9th of November to talk to 4th, 5th and 6th classes about the dangers of cyber bulling. He explained to all the children how the Garda are able to track down the people who bully others on line. This sort of activity is extreemingly upsetting for the victims. While we cannot control behaviour outside school we ask that parents encourage children to turn off mobile phones, laptops etc. at night and leave them in the kitchen. We also take this opportunity to remind parent that our school has a strong               ant-bullying policy. (See school booklet)

On Monday 19th. November our school had the Active Flag Inspection.  Feedback was positive and a full report is expected shortly.

Many thanks to all who walked for Kilberry N.S. The walk raised in €2,476.00 . This money is being used for the maintance and development of the school. During the Halloween break the main school corridor, ceiling and doors have being freshly painted. Also new blinds will be put up in our new resource room.  Some cards are still outstanding, as all cards have to be accounted for because of permit laws could you please return same to school if you have not done so already.
