School Philosophy

The school community aims to provide for the social, intellectual, spiritual and physical well being of the pupils.  The educational process is seen to be a partnership of parents/guardians, teachers, Board of Management and community to provide a positive, caring environment where good     personal relationships and mutual respect are experienced.  Our strong Catholic ethos respects    diverse traditions, both religious and cultural.

What  is Social, Personal and Health Education (S.P.H.E.)?

Social, Personal and Health Education (S.P.H.E.) provides opportunities for pupils to learn basic personal and social skills which foster integrity, self-confidence and self-esteem while nurturing sensitivity to the feelings and the rights of others.                                                                         Traditionally, Social, Personal and Health Education has been taught through subjects such as  Civics, Oral English, Religious and Physical Education. It is now widely accepted that a more comprehensive and structured approach is required if all aspects of the pupils development are to be addressed in a balanced way.

Definition of R.S.E.

R.S.E. is a programme which aims to provide opportunities for our pupils to learn caring and            responsible way.  It is part of the proposed Social, Personal and Health Education Programme (S.P.H.E.), provides children with structured opportunities to develop the knowledge, attitudes, values, beliefs and practical skills necessary to establish and sustain healthy personal relationships as children and subsequently as adults.

Links Between R.S.E. and S.P.H.E.

We promote the R.S.E. programme as an integral part of the S.P.H.E. programme and this        programme will be taught in that context.  Many of the aims of R..S.E. are already taught in our school in the Stay Safe Programme, the religious Education Programme, Physical Education, Walk tall and also through talks from outside agencies, i.e. Public Health Nurse, Dental Nurse, Accord etc.

Due to the sensitive nature of this policy, the full policy is available to view in the school office upon request. Parents will be informed via text of letter home when the sensitive aspects of this subject is taught.
